Jan Heimdal Obituary

Jan Anders Heimdal, 61, died May 27, 2026 suddenly from a heart attack at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck. ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, ND with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM CT on Wednesday, June 3 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Born in Williston, North Dakota on March 4, 1965 to Norwegian immigrant parents Anders and Astrid (Fjostad) Heimdal, Jan was raised alongside his older sister Monica in Tioga, North Dakota. Growing up he attended the local schools and participated in football, basketball, and track, as well as singing in the choir and playing saxophone in the band. With his red hair and blue eyes, he got frequent sunburns working as a lifeguard at the Tioga pool. He also gained handy skills working alongside his dad in his construction business.

Following high school graduation, he headed to Grand Forks to attend the University of North Dakota where he met his future wife, Kathi Nygaard. He followed her to Dickinson where he became employed at TMI Corporation and remained until his death (33 years). Along the way, he completed a computer science degree at Dickinson State University and earned an MBA through UND. When his wife changed careers and become a pastor, TMI allowed him to work remotely as they resided in Granville for eight years and have been in Beulah for the past three and a half years.

Jan had a variety of interests, but never quite learned how to take vacation time from work to fully enjoy his sailboats, bicycles, motorcycles and array of musical instruments. Yes, all of those in plural. And in true Red Green fashion, Jan believed “If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy” as he actively maintained houses in Dickinson and Tioga while living with his wife in a church parsonage.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Milton and Norma Nygaard, brothers-in-law Ray Nygaard and Robert Nygaard.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years Kathi Nygaard of Beulah and his sister Monica Heimdal (Brian Friel) of Denver, many cousins in Norway and 1 American cousin. He is also survived by brother in-law Gene (Sue) Nygaard of Crosby, ND, sister-in-law Jeannie Nygaard of Crosby, ND, sister-in-law Betty (Jake) Dhuyvetter from Columbus, ND, sister-in-law Karen Nygaard (Wally Morita) New Hope, MN (Lanai City, HI) and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Zion Lutheran Church-Beulah roof fund.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
