Janice Becker Obituary

Janice Becker, 83, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday September 18, 2024, at 10:00 AM, with visitation from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, 310 3rd Ave. NW, Mandan ND. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, ND.

Janice was born on the family farm in Paulson Township, ND, on September 5, 1941, the third child of four born to Andrew “Okie”; and Ethelyn Johnson. The Johnson family resided on the farm until 1957. After moving from the farm, the family resided in Egeland, ND, where Janice graduated from Egeland High School in 1960. After graduation, Janice spread her wings and attended a year of college in Bismarck and traveled the West Coast, spending time with family.  After Janice’s travels, she returned to Bismarck. It was there that she met Herbert Becker. Janice and Herbert married on February 27, 1962, in Ashley, ND. Together, Herbert and Janice were blessed with five children: David, Bruce, Valerie, Vanessa, and Dale.  Herb and Janice lived in several areas of the upper Midwest. Janice was an extremely devoted and loyal employee throughout her life and was forced to make an extremely difficult decision to retire from the last job she held with Pride Inc. after a difficult battle with COVID at the age of seventy-nine. After Janice’s recovery from COVID, she sold her home of 46 years and moved to Beulah, leaving her loyal companion; Jake, in the loving care of her granddaughter; Abby Becker, and resided there until the fall of 2022. In October 2022, Janice, one last time, put her moving shoes and made her last move to Mandan and lived along square butte creek for the remainder of her life with her daughter, Vanessa and her husband Roger. In Mandan, Janice enjoyed watching the geese, deer, and squirrels in the backyard. She also became very fond of Vanessa’s pets, often giving them treats, ear scratches, or a little “snack” off her plate of food.

Janice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mandan, ND, where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. Janice was also a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and the National VFW Home for Children.  In Janice’s spare time, she loved to crochet, counter cross-stitch, “fancy work” and was a notorious card shark.  Roger and Janice spent many hours playing Canasta and she always took great pride in taking him to the cleaners.

Janice’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her heart with joy and meant the world to her. There was nothing more that made her day then when they came for a visit or her phone would ring for a FaceTime call. Her eyes always sparkled with excitement and tears of joy when there was news of a new baby joining the family.

Janice is survived by her children: David Becker (Yvonne), Bruce Becker, Valerie Thomsen (Kenneth), Vanessa Bosch (Roger); grandchildren: Clinton Senn (Abbey), Levi Senn (Michala), Loagen Senn, Chloe Senn  (Jared), Connor Bosch, Courtney Bosch (Cameron), Brandi Schafer (Dustin), Andrew Becker (April), Alexander Becker (Carolyn), Zachary Becker (Laura), Heather Blum (Brandon), Jacob Thomsen (Amanda), Abby, Sierra, Madisen and Becker; great-grandchildren: Emma and Ryker Schafer, Rhett and Bridger Thomsen, Keeley, Corbin and Hazel Blum,  Aiden Burhans, Charolette-Jo and Addison-Jo Senn, Ivy and Briggs Senn, Hannah, Kayla, Abigail, Logan Liddle and Dakota Becker, Elzay Von Bank; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Delorus Smrz, and a very special friend and confidant, Robin Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew “Okie” and Ethelyn Johnson; one son, Dale Becker; one grandchild, Angel Senn; one sister, Helen Johnson; two brothers, Roy and Duane; son-in-law, Phillip Schwalbe; and a special friend, Herbert Becker.
