Obituary

John Walter, 77, Hazen, died peacefully on December 18, 2022, at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at a later date.

John was born on May 26, 1945 in Hazen, ND to John and Frances Walter. He was raised and educated in Hazen as well. In 1966, John entered the US Navy. On August 31, 1973, John married his wife of 49 years, Carol in Stanton, ND. Together they made their home in Hazen. John was employed with various mining operations, beginning with Glenharold Mine in Stanton, ND and retiring from Dakota Westmoreland Mine in Beulah, ND. John spent his free time camping, gardening, and fishing. His favorite pastime however was reading, as demonstrated by his extensive paperback collection.  He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite baseball and football teams.

John is survived by his wife Carol; daughter, Susan (Travis) Sundsbak; stepdaughters, Donna (Mike) Schmidt; Barb (Ray) Grant; Amanda (Don) Crabtree; stepson, Ron (Becky) Hummel; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brothers, Ken (Jean) Walter; Gary (Mickey) Walter; sister, Ardis Kilber.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Norma, and grandson, AJ Grant.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
