Julie Patrice Grossman, age 71, of Hazen, ND, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in her home surrounded by many loved ones, including her beloved dog, Maggie. Julie lived with dementia for over seven years. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will follow at Hazen City Cemetery, Hazen.
Julie was born on July 18, 1954, in Garrison, ND to Donald and Bertha “Birdie” Bezanson. She grew up in Sawyer, ND, graduating from Sawyer High School in 1972. Julie met the love of her life, Peter Grossman, at age 16. The two were married on June 14, 1975, in Sawyer. They spent their honeymoon in Medora, with Julie unfortunately spending most of her time dealing morning sickness.
Julie and Peter got quite used to packing up and moving to where their jobs would take them, such as Montana, Missouri, Iowa, until settling in Hazen. Julie and Peter attended NDSCS together, where Julie received her LPN degree in 1982. Later on Julie went back to school at University of Mary to obtain her BSN degree. She worked as a nurse for many years at Knife River Care Center in Beulah, then later for Hospice, Home Health, and Senior Suites through Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen.
Julie absolutely adored spending every moment at her lake cabin at Strawberry Lake, near Velva. She would decorate the property with flowers potted in vintage teapots, pots and pans, and barrels. Her favorite activity to do at the lake was for her to ride on the back of Peter’s motorcycle; it was their special time just the two of them. Julie also enjoyed reading, finding treasures at antique and thrift stores, entertaining family for holidays, collecting old dollhouses, watching QVC and HGTV, going out for coffee with friends, and she amassed an impressively large collection of vintage Pyrex dishes.
Julie was known as Nana to her five grandbabies and a sixth one in Heaven. She was lovingly involved in the care of her premie granddaughters during a very critical time. She cherished time with all of her grandchildren, showering them with attention, finding joy in giving them the best gifts, reading them countless Berenstain Bears books, and loving time at the lake with them on the pontoon.
Julie is survived by her husband of 50 years, Peter; her son, Pete Grossman and his daughter, Kateri, and former daughter-in-law, Mandy Grossman, of Hazen; her daughter, Jennifer (Sean) Grossman-Chinburg, and their children, Juliana, Lauren, and Jase, of Fort Collins, Colorado; her daughter, Whitney (Jef) Hauschild, and their son, Dexter, of Breckenridge, Minnesota; her brothers, Max (Shirley) Bezanson, of Ryder, and Russel (AnnaMae) Bezanson, of Minot; her brothers-in-law, Paul (Pat) Grossman, of Hazen, and Parrell (Sheri) Grossman, of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant granddaughter, Claire Chinburg; and sister-in-law, Patty Grossman.
The family would like to thank the many tremendous health care workers from Home Instead and Hospice that took such good care of Julie.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome at Sakakawea Hospice in Hazen.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
