Karina Jensen Singer, 93 years old, passed away at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck, North Dakota on June 26, 2022. Services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at Barbot Funeral Chapel, Beulah, ND with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Born Edith Louise Jensen, the first of four daughters, on April 9, 1929 in Oakland, California to George Korte and Mary Lipman Jensen. She was followed by sisters Elizabeth Korte Steward, Mary Kellogg Jensen (deceased 1971) and Barbara Jensen Conley. She was raised in Berkley, CA but spent her high school years at a boarding school in Phoenix, AZ followed by her attendance at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree. She was a Delta Gamma legacy member.
Her maternal grandfather, Frederick Lockwood Lipman, born in 1866 in San Francisco, CA, married Edith Law in 1891. Karina and her three sisters loved spending two weeks every summer at their grandparent’s cottage in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Her paternal grandparents, George P.W. and Hattie Jensen, lived around the corner from her childhood home. She would visit with her father and spend hours wandering through the very large and magical garden. Karina was extremely fond of her grandparents. As a small child, Karina would sit on Grandmother Hattie’s lap and hear her true story of sitting on President Lincoln’s lap.
She worked at various jobs from nanny to copy editor to a salmon factory before moving to Reno where she worked at a casino and met her husband. They were world travelers and enjoyed visiting other countries.
Karina met her future husband, John Singer (deceased 1990), the love of her life in Reno, Nevada. They married in Redding, CA on November 23, 1965. After living in Reno for a short time they moved to his family’s shared land south of Beulah, North Dakota. They farmed together with his brother for many years. Karina assumed the role of the farm wife (and even drove the grain truck) and loved the country life where she found much joy and purpose. She was a member of the Aplin Homemakers, Beulah Women’s Club, Beulah Library Club and volunteer and they were members of Zion Lutheran Church. They had an active social life with dinner and dancing most Saturday nights a favorite activity.
In addition to her sisters Elizabeth and Barbara, Karina is survived by seven nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews. Karina is also survived by her sister in law, Esther Fleisher and brother in law, Henry (Mabel) Singer, and eleven nieces and nephews-in-law along with several great-nieces and great- nephews in law. She is also survived by very dear friends, Carlotta Kostelecky, Ann Mahoney, and Donna Mae Smith.
She was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Hilda (Lester) Blohm; brothers in law Herb (Alice) Singer; Erwin (Ruth) Singer; and Robert Fleisher as well as nephews Todd and Scott Singer.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
