Kerry Lee Kessler, 56, Stanton passed away July 19, 2020 due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT July 22, 2020 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton with Rev. Dennis Ristvedt officiating. Burial will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, six miles north of Stanton.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton.
Kerry was born February 10, 1964 in Bismarck at MedCenter One. He was the youngest of three children to Ray and Bev (Berg) Kessler. Kerry lived in Bismarck the first six years of his life. They moved to the home place farm and Kerry started first grade in Stanton and graduated in 1982.
After high school he attended the Police Academy in Bismarck and got a job at the Mercer County Sheriff's Department. He worked there for about 10 years leaving in 1993 as a Deputy/Jailer.
Kerry married Darcy Fowler in 1987. They were only married for two years.
After leaving the Police Department in 1993 he went to work for Weist Trucking and going over the road. He didn't stay there long, as it took him away from home.
He met Lisa Markel in 1990. She had three children (Larry, Lacey and Lindsey) He was quite fond of them and treated them like his own. Kerry and Lisa married December 20, 2001 at the courthouse and later married in the church with family on February 2, 2002 (he picked the date so he wouldn't forget, 02/02/02). Kerry adopted the kids in April 2002. They divorced in 2013.
He worked for M&M Transport for many years. He later took a job with Challenger Industries for only a couple of years. He worked a couple other trucking jobs until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and he could no longer work. He beat his battle and was cancer free for two years and was diagnosed again in February 2020 and had recently finished his treatments.
Kerry bought the family farm in 2009. He enjoyed the country living with horses, cows, and farming. Kerry enjoyed team roping in his spare time and was a member of Twin Rivers Saddle Club for many years. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle around with friends. He enjoyed having his kids and their family home and spending time with his grandkids. He is known for his sense of humor and being a jokester.
Kerry is survived by his three children, Larry (Sara) Kessler of Florida, Lacey (Larry) Shefstad of Crosby, Lindsey (Jayme) Odegaard of Tioga; his mother, Bev Kessler of Stanton; one brother, Dean (Frances) Kessler of Stanton; one sister, Karla (Jeff) Thomas of Hazen; four grandchildren, Jake and Ellie Kessler and Wyatt and Kamirae Shefstad; three nephews, Tim Kessler of Stanton, Derrick (Leah) Kessler of Hazen, Cody (fiancee, Gabriella Olsen) Thomas of Hazen; one niece, Kayla (Josh) Cotton of Stanton; and numerous aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Ray, his grandparents, and three uncles, Don, Lloyd, and Jim and several close friends.
