Leo Hoepfner Obituary

Leo Steve Hoepfner, 70, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Glendale, Arizona on April 6, 2026.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT, Friday, May 1, 2026 at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.  All who knew and loved him are invited to attend.

Leo was born on January 25, 1956, in Hazen, North Dakota, to Steve and Coleta Hoepfner. He was the oldest of five children and grew up on the family farm in Beulah, North Dakota. After graduating from Beulah High School, he attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, where he earned an associate degree in electronics.

After college, Leo began working for Western Geophysical in Wyoming, where he created many lasting memories traveling the state and enjoying the outdoors. He later returned to North Dakota to help on the family farm and worked at Montana Dakota Utilities Power Plant. He then moved into Instrumentation and Controls at Coyote Station during its Startup and later hired on for the startup of Basin Electric’s Antelope Valley Station for Unit 1. Leo was promoted to a lead position and dedicated 30 years there before retiring.

Following retirement, Leo and his life partner, NancyAnn, moved to Arizona to the house they affectionately referred to as “Jenny”. There, they enjoyed the warm weather and the view of the palm trees in their front yard. To escape the summer heat, they spent time at their beloved cabin, “Kul-man.”

Leo loved spending his evenings tinkering in his garage. When building his home, he thoughtfully designed a heated garage complete with a pit, allowing him to fix just about anything. He will be remembered for his love of Raiders football, watching NASCAR races on Sundays, and, of course, his cherished GTO.

Leo’s life was lived and celebrated with his life partner, NancyAnn, and his children and their spouses: Rick (Mylla), Robin (Troy), Liz (Travis), Sarah (Mark), Leo J. “Sonny” [deceased] (Amy), and Suzanna (Jaime). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Paige, Kayla (Ethan), Oscar (Hannah), Shelby (Julian), Abigail, Frank, Jacob, Kylla, Lucas, Tommi, Isabella, Ivadel, Trypp, and Brianna.

He is also survived by his siblings: Gregory (Susan), Ernest (Pauline), Jean (Debra), and Anita (Bob), along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Coleta Hoepfner; his son, Leo J. “Sonny” Hoepfner; and NancyAnn’s parents, Oscar and Marvel Miller.

Leo will be deeply missed and remembered for his hardworking nature, his ability to fix anything, and the love he had for his family.
