Leona I. (Voegele) Mattheis

Leona Mattheis, 86, Hazen, passed away August 21, 2024 at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck surrounded by her loving family.

Leona was born August 22, 1937 to Daniel and Elsie Bauer-Voegele in the Bluegrass Township south of Hazen, ND. She was baptized on October 10th, 1937 by Lutheran Pastor Friedrich Kircke from Zap, ND. She was confirmed on July 6th, 1952 in the Lutheran denomination. Leona attended school in Beulah and graduated in 1956.  After graduation, Leona went to work for the school from September 1956 to May 1957.

Labor Day weekend in 1957 Raymond and Leona began their love story.

Leona was selling tickets to the dance at the Dreamland Pavilion. Raymond asked Leona for a dance. It only took that night for them to know they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.   They were married on June 8, 1958 and spent 66 wonderful years together.

Leona is survived by her loving husband, Raymond, Hazen; her sons, Carey (Laurie) Mattheis, Hazen, Eric (Barbara) Mattheis, Beulah; sisters, Arlene (Elmer) Schwarz, Washburn, and Alice (Hilmer) Neuberger, Junction City, OR; grandchildren, Samantha (Steve) Fetsch, Hazen, Justin, Courtney Mattheis, Bismarck, Charles (Amber) Mattheis, Beebe, AR, Mitchell (Alicia Engstrom) Mattheis, Beulah, Morgan (Brian Robertson) Mattheis, Dickinson, Spencer (Bree) Mattheis, Valley City, and Mason Mattheis, Hazen; and great-grandchildren, Ava and Danika Fetsch, Tucker Mattheis, Raelynn Olson and Adalynn Robertson.    
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Elsie Voegele; one sister, Esther Bauer; one brother-in-law, Hilmer Neuberger; and their son, Dwight Mattheis.
