Louis Ziegler Obituary

Louis Ziegler, 90, of Bismarck ND, formerly of Hazen, ND and Drake, ND passed from this earth the evening of Monday, May 6, 2024 at CHI St Alexius with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Friday, May 17, 2023 at St. Martin Catholic Church, Hazen ND with interment and lunch directly following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Louis “Louie” was born February 26, 1934 to Andrew and Barbara (Martel) Ziegler in the Drake Hospital and raised on the family farm north of Drake. He was the youngest of nine boys and three girls.

On April 14, 1958 he was united in marriage to our beloved mother, Bernadine “Bernie” Schell in Drake. They made their home in Drake and raised four children, Mark, Keith, Pam and Terry. Louie loved his polka music and dancing and was very good at it. Louie also played the drums and, along with his brother Virgil, even started their own old time band and played at different events for several years. He loved farming and sitting on the tractor on land he purchased near the farm he grew up on until 1989. Mom & Dad then moved to Golva ND that year for Mom’s job and Dad helped out on some area farms and the elevator in town until their retirement in 2001. They then moved to Hazen so they could be closer to family, also so mom could be near Lake Sakakawea for her love of fishing walleye. Dad went with fishing, “reluctantly” most of the time as he knew how much Mom enjoyed it, but then he was usually the one who would catch the biggest walleye. After Mom passed in 2014, Dad stayed in their home until 2018 before moving to Primrose Assisted Living in Bismarck. In March of 2023, after a stay in the hospital, Dad moved to Missouri Slope Nursing Home in Bismarck where he stayed until his passing.

Louis is survived by sons, Mark (Reyna) Hazen, Terry (Daphne) Bismarck and daughter Pam, Mandan; nine grandchildren, Shane, Josh, Rose, Kayla, Carlie, Paige, Mariah, Rylee and Sean; nine great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brancen, Hailey, Jasper, Micah, Louis, Natalie, Ella and Ivy; two sisters, Rose Miller, Drake and Evelyn Weninger, Minot; two brothers-in-law, George and Bob; and three sisters-in-law, Betty, Delores and Rose.

Louis was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Bernie; beloved son, Keith; his parents, Andrew & Barbara; eight brothers, Joe, Donald, Andrew Jr., Felix, Mike, Adam, Pete, Virgil; and one sister, Betty.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
