Marlo Grindberg Obituary

Marlo Grindberg, 74, of Hazen, ND passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen under the care of hospice.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Peace Lutheran Church, 520 Central Ave, Hazen with Pastor Mark Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marlo was born on November 7, 1946 in Minot, ND to Oscar and Ellen (Hystad) Grindberg.  He was raised in Velva and graduated from Velva High School in 1965.  He went on to receive a degree in civil engineering from North Dakota State School of Science.  Marlo married Laurel Berge in 1968 and together they had one daughter, Amy.  He joined the US Navy in June 1968 and served aboard the destroyer USS Sellers.  He did two tours in the Mediterranean as a Quartermaster 2nd class and was discharge in May 1972.   After his discharge, he moved to Hazen, ND where he married Donna Stewart Burkhardsmeier in 1981.  He worked at Glen Harrold and Dakota Westmoreland coal mines before retiring in 2012.  Marlo enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, watching Nascar and playing cards, especially pinochle. 

Marlo is survived by his wife, Donna; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri (Jim) Block of Hazen, Amy (Jason) Stenman of Maple Grove MN, and Tracy (Dave) Thiel of Bismarck ND; one son and daughter-in-law, Rob (Dorrie) Burkhardsmeier of Bismarck ND; one son-in-law, Cledus Wiedrich of Hazen; one sister, Darlene Hofmeister of Mandan ND; one nephew, Carl Hofmeister of Bismarck; 13 grandchildren, Cassandra (Lucas) Pippenger, Dustin (Hailey) and Cody Wiedrich, Ryan (Kyra), Talya and Brady Block, Josh and Lauren Stenmen, Bobbie, Nate and Zeva Burkhardsmeier, Kalie and Gage Thiel; five great-grandchildren, Sabastian Pippenger, Kennedy Wiedrich, Ashton, Ember and Ivory Block.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ellen Grindberg and one daughter, Deanna Wiedrich.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Marlo’s name to the Bismarck Cancer Center or Hazen Hospice.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
