Martha Thomson, 103, of Beulah, ND passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Immanuel Baptist Church, Beulah with Pastor Jeremy Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Martha was born on June 29, 1918 at home, near Otter Creek in Oliver County, North Dakota. She was the eighth of 10 children born to David and Martha (Karlin) Betz. She attended country school until the seventh grade. When she was a first grader, Martha contracted polio and had it for a year before she fully recovered.
Martha married Cecil Chute in 1940 and the couple had two children, Darrell and Joyce. In 1947, she married James R. Thomson and added four more children to their family, Judy, Jane, Jim and Peggy.
Martha loved the outdoors. She always grew a large garden and enjoyed canning and making jelly. She also loved to ride horse. Martha was a big music fan and was a skilled guitarist and enjoyed old western songs. Martha had a big heart when it came to her family. She cared for her deaf sister, Ida, who lived with Martha’s family for many years. Martha enjoyed large holiday and birthday celebrations, hosting these events well into her 90s.
She is survived by her son, Darrell of Beulah; her daughters, Joyce Jones of Spokane, WA, Judy Knoell of Hazen, ND, Jane (Bill) Swan of Las Vegas, NV and Peggy (Cary) Wolf of Hazen; nine grandchildren, Cletus Zundel, Vicki Applewhaite, Shelby Keuper, Luke Swan, Mark Swan, David Swan, Jennifer Neuberger, Jessica Hartman and Jayme Wolf; 27 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, David and Martha; her husband, James; her son, Jim; her granddaughter, Jackie Hanks; and her siblings, Henry Betz, Ben Betz, Helen Mindt, Bertha Reich, Elsie Reich, Ida Betz, Edna Erickson, Emma Bentz and Laura Betz.
