Marvin Hafner Obituary

Marvin Hafner, 83, of Beulah, ND departed this life peacefully in his sleep early on January 23, 2022 in the care of Sakakawea Hospice in Hazen, ND.  Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Immanuel Baptist Church, Beulah with Rev. Wesley Hafner (Marvin’s nephew) officiating.  Burial and graveside service will immediately follow at Kronthal Cemetery north of Beulah.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 at Barbot Funeral Home in Beulah.

Marvin Roy Hafner was born on the family farm north of Beulah, on December 22, 1938 to Ernest and Ottillia Herrmann Hafner, the youngest of eight children.  He grew up on the family farm in the Kronthal community surrounded by extended family.  Marvin was baptized and confirmed at Kronthal Lutheran Church and attended country school transferring to Beulah public school for the upper grades.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps with his cousin, Myron Hafner and good friend, Ray Binder.  He proudly served his enlistment at Camp Pendleton, California and was honorably discharged.  He returned to Beulah and entered into the family business with his brother, Hilmer. Together they operated Hafner Brothers Farm and raised Black Angus cattle for over 40 years.

Marvin married Jo Elaine Misslin and together they raised three children, Mark, Myles and Melissa.

Marvin was a student of military history.  He liked to watch NASCAR and the Green Bay Packers.  A man of quiet demeanor (unless he was working cattle), he was a regular at the Night Owl Bar and enjoyed visiting with his many friends there.  One of his favorite pastimes was completing the Bismarck Tribune crossword puzzle daily.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ottillia; and siblings Delores Hafner Joos, Marjorie Hafner Wiedrich, Hubert Hafner, Eunice Hafner Hjelm and Sylvia Hafner Koppi.

He is survived by Jo Hafner; two sons, Mark (Denise) Hafner of Beulah and Myles (Ann) Hafner of Beulah; and one daughter, Melissa (Trevor) Longtine of Lake Park, Minnesota.  He was proud of his grandchildren Kara (Erich) Hafner Skoor of Seattle, WA, Deanna (Brad) Hafner Hunt of Calgary, Alberta, Josten (Jalyn Duttenhefer) Hafner of Bismarck, Victoria Hafner of Beulah, Malinda Hafner and Jacob Hafner of Killdeer and Melina Longtine of Lake Park, Minnesota.  Marvin was also survived by his brother, Hilmer Hafner of Beulah; his sister, Arlene (Herb) Hafner Grenz of Hazelton, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin had special affection for his great-grandchildren, Elijah and Anabelle Hafner, Amelia and Myles Phillips and Hailey Hunt evidenced by the smile usually shown only to them.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to SMC Hospice and Home Instead.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
