Mary Berger Obituary

Mary K. Berger, at age 71, peacefully journeyed to her eternal life on May 25, 2025, after a courageous battle to remain with family and friends for a while longer. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT, Friday June 13, 2025, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Hazen, ND, with Fr. Tom Grafsgaard officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will follow at a later date.  Mary’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, from North Dakota to Florida, especially the lake family.  Mary was a mom, a wife, a friend to many, a teacher to some and with her quick wit, managed to stir the pot at many a function.  Mostly she loved being a grandmother and was up for a game anytime.

Mary was born in Dickinson, ND, on January 3, 1954 to Lorne and Pyllis (Pat) Beaudoin.  Being the youngest of three girls, Mary experienced life’s realities early with the passing of her mother when she was fifteen.

Mary graduated with the class of 1972, from Dickinson High School and wasted no time leaping into the vast unknown.  Following a short experiment with college, Mary headed west with friends and settled in the Seattle area.  After a brief marriage to Mark McGregor and a very young daughter, Richelle, in tow, she moved back to Dickinson, ND.  As a single mother, Mary step-laddered her way through the hospitality industry, eventually landing management roles, enduring the hardships and impossible schedules along the way, following Richelle through sports and life whenever possible.

During this time, Mary formed a friendship with Darrell Berger and so began a new chapter which involved lake life, travel, and a blended family.  They were married in 1995, embarking on a lifestyle that included shorelines and friends.  Mary retired in 2017, and landed between Lake Sakakawea summers and as a Florida resident, winters there.  Along the way, Mary became proficient at Mahjong and was famous for her walleye, onion rings and 4th of July Bloody Mary Bar.

At the same time covid gripped the country in 2020, Mary was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer which she battled till her death.  At the very least, treatment gave us some additional time with her.

Mary is survived by her husband, Darrell; daughter, Richelle McGregor,(Darin) blended family daughters, Celeste Marro (BJ), Chalsey Blanchard (Miran); grandchildren, Owen, Scott, Embrie, Addy, Aspen, Camden and Milo; two sisters, Sharon Schwartz and Shirley Kaveny (Patrick); along with nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorne and Phyllis Beaudoin.

Though gentle in spirit, Mary was a pillar of strength and a champion of those less fortunate.  So, in lieu of flowers, choose a charity you cherish, the family encourages SMC Hospice, Hazen, ND.  Though Mary left us too soon, we’re grateful knowing that from a better place, she is helping us to let her go. Mary’s final wishes were “Miss me a little but let me go”.
