Maynard Lee (Bull) Bear, 69, Twin Buttes, died on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the Sanford Medical Center, Bismarck, ND. Maynard was born September 24, 1953, in Richardton, ND, the son of Leonard A. Bear, Sr. and Mirriam Marie Bull.
A viewing will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 am CST, on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Barbot Funeral Home in Beulah, ND. A small service will follow the viewing at Barbot Funeral Home at 10:00 am.
His remains will be cremated, and the family will have a separate burial where his ashes will be laid to rest at Stone Cemetery, on Friday, August 4, 2023.
Maynard was the third of eleven children to Mirriam. He was raised on the Fort Berthold Reservation by his grandmother, Rose Nagel-Fournier, and was a member of the Knife Clan. He attended Flandreau Indian School, in Flandreau, SD, and in 1970 met his long-time partner of 38 years, Arlene Black Crow. Until 1972, they moved to Lead, SD, where they lived most of their lives and raised four children.
He was quiet a gifted artist and appreciated drawing and painting, which led to tattooing as one of his life interests, he was musically inclined and loved to sing and play guitar. And his passion for a time after rebuilding an old soft-tail Harley Davidson was taking long bike rides in the Black Hills of SD with his brother Allen (Butch). He was a jack of all trades in life and work, most of his work was in construction, road and residential properties and loved working on cars (self-taught) and also taught his sons.
He retired in and around his home, Twin Buttes, ND, where he lived out his life with his remaining family and many friends, until his death.
He leaves his children, two sons, Duane Lawrence Bull, and Maynard Lee Bull Jr., and two daughters, Gail Leigh Montana, and Michelle Leigh Black Crow, one son-in-law, Rolando Montana, Sr., and six grandchildren, Austin Black Crow, Lauren Bull Montana-Eggers, Samantha Bull Montana, Rolando Montana Jr., Takota Bull Montana and Miriam Bull Montana. As well as another son, Ty Bull from a later relationship.
He is survived by his five loving sisters, Kathy Garza, Gwen Hostler, Marilyn Stone, Juanita Snow and Colleen Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rose Nagel-Fournier and grandfather, Lawrence Bull, his parents, Leonard and Mirriam, and his four brothers, Durwin, Allen (Butch) Jr., Wilbur, Wallace, and one sister, Brenda.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
