Melvin Schlender, 83, of Golden Valley, died peacefully Monday, January 30, 2023 at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen surrounded by his family. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST, Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah, with Rev. Toby Heller officiating. Burial will follow at St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Golden Valley, ND. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.
Melvin was born on the home farm north of Golden Valley to Henry and Emma (Renner) Schlender on December 29, 1939. He was baptized on January 25, 1940 and confirmed on July 12, 1953. After graduating from Beulah High School he went to Heavy Equipment School in Des Moines, IA. On February 9, 1968, he married Fern Boeckel at St. James Lutheran Church in Golden Valley and they were married for 54 years. Together they farmed and ranched on Melvin’s family farm north of Golden Valley.
Melvin served on the church board faithfully for most of his adult life. He was on the Mercer County Weed board for 40 years and also served on the Farm Bureau Board. He loved farming and ranching and driving his side-by-side. He liked hunting and spending time with his family. He also liked watching his rodeo’s and westerns.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fern; his daughter, Sherry (Perry) Walker of Zap; two sons, Scott (Melissa) Schlender of Golden Valley and Jonathan (Michelle) Schlender of Zap; one sister, Ardella Berg of Black Hawk, SD; one sister-in-law, Evangeline Schlender of Halliday; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman and Ralph Schlender.
