Monica Maas Obituary

Monica Loretta Maas, 88, died peacefully on April 19, 2023, at Knife River Care Center in Beulah, ND. Services will be held Monday, April 24 at 10:00 AM CDT at St Martin’s Catholic Church with Father Thomas Grafsgaard officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday, April 24 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church.

Monica was born near Solen, ND, on November 10, 1934, the second to the last of 12 children of Peter and Monica Fleck Mauer. Monica was raised in Solen, ND and graduated from Solen High after playing half court basketball and cheering for the Sioux. Monica worked as a secretary on the 17th floor of the Capital with her sister Ann. On July 2, 1956, she married her loving husband of 66 years, Dallas Maas, at Sacred Heart Church in Solen. Together they farmed south of Hazen. Monica spent many years in St Martin’s Altar Society and cleaned the church for many years with her friend, Doris Schwab. She worked at Krause’s Super Valu in the mid 70’s and clerked for the Stanton Rural Fire Department for 30+ years. Monica spent many years following her children and grandchildren’s events and was involved with the Bison Boosters when they were chartered. Hunting for arrowheads was one of her favorite pastimes.

Monica is survived by her husband, Dallas; daughter Bobbie (Bruce) Schramm, sons Arliss (Dodie) Maas, Dallas (friend Michelle) Maas, and numerous grand and great grandchildren. Two sisters-in-law Bonita Maas and Judy Mauer and one brother-in-law, Steve Doll. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight sisters Katie Leingang, Lee Brown, Verby Ereth, Josephine Raszler, Rose Kary, Maria Ereth, Ludmilla (Toots) Schaefbauer, and Ann Doll, three brothers Joe, Ted, and Francis Mauer. Two sisters-in-law Geraldine Mauer and Harriet Maas and nine brothers-in-law Jake Leingang, Bert Brown, Leo Ereth, Richard Raszler, Harry Kary, Bill Ereth, Quentin Schaefbauer, and Melvin and Myron Maas.

The family requests memorials to Knife River Care Center, St Matthew Cemetery Endowment Fund, or memorial of your choice.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
