Myron “Mike” Martin McLaughlin, 83, of Hazen, ND passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023, after a long battle with COPD and emphysema. His daughters surrounded him with love and prayers as he drew his last breath and entered Heaven. Services will be held at 11:00 AM CST on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating. Burial will follow at St. Martin Catholic cemetery, Hazen.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mike was born the third of nine children to John and Hertha (Miller) McLaughlin in Hazen, ND on May 21, 1940. He was raised in Hazen on the family homestead. He lost his mother at the age of 11 and helped to raise his younger siblings.
Mike served in the Army from 1957-1959. He was a member of the 57th Armored Infantry, Company B, and was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany.
Mike returned to North Dakota and worked for a rancher near Jamestown, ND where he met and married Patricia McPherson on October 15, 1960. They had two girls, Teresa (Terri) Marie and Dawn Marie, while they lived in Jamestown. They moved to Hazen in 1967, where Mike farmed and ranched, while working other various jobs. They had two more daughters, Paula Jean and Kelli Jean. They built a home and moved out to the family farm in 1975. They farmed and ranched for many years. They lost their oldest daughter, Terri, in a car accident in 1980 at the age of 16. Mike and Pat leaned on God during this difficult time, but knew they would see Terri again in Heaven.
Mike loved watching his girls play sports and ride in rodeos. His greatest passion was horses! He participated in rodeos as often as possible, and his favorite event was team roping. He also enjoyed breaking horses for other people, rounding up cattle, working cattle with his friends and nice leisurely rides. Mike was the definition of a true American cowboy, he was the “real deal”.
Mike and Pat divorced in October 1991. He married Margie Opp (Richter) in August 1994. They enjoyed horses and riding together. They later divorced, and Mike lived out his final days on the family farm.
Mike loved all of his family members very much and is survived by three daughters, Dawn Grindahl, Fargo, ND, Paula Lavelle, Horace, ND and Kelli (Kelly) Heier, Ray, ND; his eight grandchildren, Amanda (Chris) Norton, Jarred (Kayla) Grindahl, Zachary (Mariah) Grindahl, William (Emmalee) Lavelle, Alexandra Lavelle, Matthew (Jayme) Heier, Samantha (Jared) Vejtasa, and Kendra Heier; his nine great-grandchildren, Victor, Jada, Roman, Anya, Maddox, Emree, Bransen, Briggs and Ivory; one brother, Jerome McLaughlin; two sisters, Mary Ann (Syl) Schutt, and Patricia (Neil) Blume; one brother-in-law, Jerome Weiand; one sister-in-law, Jill McLaughlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
