Raymond Duane Mattheis was born on August 8, 1933, to Rudolf and Lydia (Wiedrich) Mattheis in Hazen, ND. He grew up on the family farm eight miles northwest of Hazen, where he attended a rural school through the eighth grade. Raymond was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was the second of three children and the only son of his parents.
After completing his schooling, Raymond worked tirelessly on the family farm, managing day-to-day operations after learning much of the work alongside his father. He also helped care for his ailing mother and his younger sister, Betty Lou. Raymond understood the meaning of hard work and knew that nothing in life came easily- but also knew how to enjoy life.
Raymond was charismatic, kind-hearted, and always willing to serve others. He was quick-witted and could light up any room he entered. His jokes and laughter were unforgettable, and there was never a dull moment in his presence. Raymond was deeply loved by all who knew him, and that love was evident everywhere he went.
The next chapter of Raymond’s life began on Labor Day weekend in 1957, when he met the love of his life, Leona Voegele. Leona was selling tickets at a dance at the Dreamland Pavilion south of Beulah when Raymond asked her for a dance. It took only one night for them to know they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
Raymond and Leona were married on June 8th, 1958, beginning a marriage that lasted 66 wonderful years. Together they farmed, raised their family, served their church, and built a legacy rooted in love, kindness, faith, and hard work. From their union came three sons- Carey, Dwight, and Eric- whom Raymond loved deeply and taught the value of a strong work ethic.
Raymond is survived by his sons: Carey (Laurie) Mattheis of Hazen, Eric (Barbara) Mattheis of Beulah; grandchildren: Samantha (Steve) Fetsch of Hazen, Justin Mattheis, Courtney Olson of Bismarck, Charles (Amber) Mattheis of Beebe, AR, Mitchell (Alicia Engstrom) Mattheis of Beulah, Morgan (Brian) Robertson of Dickinson, Spencer (Bree) Mattheis of Valley City, and Mason Mattheis of Hazen; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leona Mattheis; his son, Dwight Mattheis; his sisters, Betty Lou (Herb) Hintz and Elaine (Bennie) Scheid, both of Hazen; and his parents, Rudolf and Lydia Mattheis.
Raymond’s legacy lives on through his family, his faith, and the countless lives he touched with laughter, generosity, and love.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
