Ricky “Rick” Scheid, 71, Hazen, was called to his eternal home on September 2, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center, Bismarck, surrounded by all his immediate family members. Services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT, Friday, September 6, 2024, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will follow at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM CDT, Thursday, also at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen.
Rick was born at the Hazen Hospital on June 17, 1953, the second of four children of Benjamin and Elaine (Matthies) Scheid. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, ND. Rick went to a farm school until sixth grade, and continued his education at Hazen High School, graduating with the class of 1971. After high school, Rick attended North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton for Diesel Mechanics.
On June 7, 1974, he married his loving wife of 50 years, Zola Morast at Peace Lutheran Church. Together they farmed and raised their family at Rick’s childhood home north of Hazen. Rick continued to farm and ranch after they moved to the home they built just outside of Hazen in 2007. Rick was a true farmer through and through. He raised cattle until the fall of 2022 and in the spring of 2023, when his health no longer allowed him to do the job he loved, he retired and had an auction of all his farm equipment. He understood the value of giving back to his community and the farming industry by serving on the Mercer County Fair Board, the PLC church council, Enerbase board, the Mercer County Planning and Zoning committee and the Cenex board of directors. As a farmer and rancher, most of his time was spent planting in the spring, harvesting in the fall and calving in the spring but he loved watching football and is still waiting for the Vikings to have a winning season. He participated in a bowling league and a pinochle club for many years. As a grandparent, he always enjoyed watching the grandkids’ activities. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather.
Rick is survived by his wife of 50 years, Zola; three daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Chris Fix, Harwood, ND; Beth and Heath Lessard, Bismarck; Kayla and Brandon Benz, Bismarck; one brother, Richard (Nancy) Scheid, Hazen; two sisters Linda (Mark) Klein, Hazen; Mary (Brett) Losey of Chugiak Alaska; and nine grandchildren, Liberty, Kayce and Beckett Fix, Paisley, Bodee and Croix Lessard and Lucca, Brek and Koa Benz and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Bennie and Elaine Scheid and his father-in- law and mother- in- law, Albert and Ruby Morast.
The family requests that memorials to be made to the PLC Cemetery fund and Sakakawea Medical Center Hospice.
Arrangements conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
