Roger “Rod” David Farrar of Hazen, North Dakota passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 18, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CT Thursday October 23, 2025, at Barbot Funeral home in Beulah, ND with burial to follow at 10:00 AM MT Friday October 24, 2025 at The Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis South Dakota.
Rod was born June 8, 1951, to David J. and Johnna Lou (Gragg) Pape in El Dorado, Kansas. He was later adopted and raised by Walter “Token” and Johnna Lou Farrar. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1969. He worked on numerous ranches in the area throughout high school and until he joined the Army in 1972. Rod was stationed in Germany until ’73 and then medically relocated back to Kansas, where he worked in the mail room at Leavenworth Army Base. After multiple surgeries, he was Honorably Medically discharged from the Army in Aurora, Colorado in 1976.
Rod met his first love Donice Algren, in Colorado, after his discharge in ’76. They married shortly after and at the same time Rod became a Dad to her sons Will and Wade Brown. Rod and Donice enjoyed coon and big game hunting, and their hounds. Rod and Donice had 2 sons together, Ryan David in 1977 and Micheal Damien in 1978. In 1982, Rod and his boys moved back to Kansas. After returning to Kansas, He reconnected with Jan Orton. They were married in 1989. The couple had a daughter, Whitney Dayne. They and their three kids lived in Longton, El Dorado, and Rosalia, Kansas. Rod raised cattle and was a pipe fitter and Jan was a teacher. After their divorce in 2000, Rod continued to travel with his pipe fitting, often being a foreman or General foreman, across all the US. Rod retired from “being on the road” in 2009, due to medical issues. He had numerous surgeries between 2009 and 2020. In 2021 he moved to ND to get better health care and be closer to his son, Ryan and his family. After he was settled into his home in Hazen, He told Ryan, “I am finally home.”
Rod loved to tell stories and reminisce. He talked in great lengths about the old days when he helped show cattle and when he raised his own. Rod always wanted to have another herd of momma cows with calves, but his health wouldn’t allow it. He had many stories and would usually talk your ear off if you let him. He said his greatest accomplishments were his children. He was very proud of all of them, and he loved them in his own way. Though he didn’t always do things right, did things his own way. He loved his children dearly! His greatest pleasures in life were hunting, fishing, and teasing his grandkids. Although many may never get over his loss, time will heal wounds. We can all find happy memories and share stories and tales that could make us smile through the tears.
Rod is survived by his Son, Ryan (Ambour) Farrar Hazen, ND; Daughter, Whitney (Aaron) McCosh Wichita, KS; Stepsons Wade (Nan) Brown and Will Brown Lake Havasu City, AZ; Sister Denzel (Steve) Wright Springdale, AR; His “brother from another mother” and Cousin Galen (Linda) Pape K.
