Ruth Elaine (Vastag Duckwitz) Sailer

Ruth Elaine (Vastag) (Duckwitz) Sailer, age 77, of Beulah, ND died November 7, 2021 at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Beulah with Pastor Kent Sperry officiating. Burial will follow at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Zap, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CST on Wednesday, November 10 at Barbot Funeral Home.

Ruth was born on September 12, 1944, the daughter of Albert and Eleanore (Hartmann) Vastag in Richardton, ND. She attended school in Hebron, ND. There she met the love of her life the first day of deer season in 1961. Ruth was united in marriage to Harold Duckwitz on March 17, 1962. They made their first home near Hebron. Later in August of 1971 they moved to Zap, ND, where they had a hobby farm. Mom loved her chickens, geese and ducks. Mom enjoyed being in her beautiful gardens, both vegetable and flower. Mom never missed any of her children’s extracurricular activities.  Her love for the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Braves was proudly displayed.

Harold passed November 14, 1979.  Ruth met Gustav Sailer in 1980 and married on May 23, 1981. Together they lived in Zap for 23 years and move to Beulah in 2003.

Mom was an avid baker, gardener and quilter.  Baking holiday cookies and fruitcakes six weeks ahead of Christmas, just so they had time to age. Mom had won numerous awards at the county fair for her beautiful dinner plate dahlias and vegetables. Mom was happy to be sitting at the sewing machine quilting for her family and for the church quilting group.

Mom’s pride and joy were her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Grandma would attend their activities when able.

Ruth was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Ruth is survived by her children, Sandra (Dwight) Bohrer, Jesse (Tracy) Duckwitz, Shari (Shane) Gamber, Jerrie (James) Hauser,  Frances (Dean) Kessler, Russell (Cheryl) Sailer, Steven (Valerie) Sailer, Pam (Tim) Bertsch;  17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; siblings, Harold (Bonnie) Vastag, Ray (Flo) Vastag, Duane (Marlene) Vastag, Darlene Vastag, Karen (Gordon) Gunsch, John (Char) Vastag, Betty Marthaller,; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Schneeweis.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Harold Duckwitz and Gustav Sailer; her grandson, Jason Hauser; her brother Roger; and her sister Dorothy.
