Stanley Fred Campbell, 79, peacefully left his earthly home in Beulah, ND, for his eternal home in Heaven on June 28, 2022. Services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at New Life Worship Center, Beulah, with Pastor Brian Skaar officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah City Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Stanley was born October 10, 1942, in Elgin, ND, to Alvin and Elsie Campbell. He enjoyed growing up on the farm, especially driving the Ford tractors. He attended country school through eighth grade. After graduating from Lemmon High School in 1961, he earned a two-year teaching certificate from Dickinson State. He taught country school for two years before returning to Dickinson to finish his bachelor’s degree.
Stanley taught eighth grade math and earth science in New Town, ND, for 13 years. There he met fellow teacher and Dickinson graduate, Mercedes Will. When she discovered he owned a calculator and would happily help her average grades, she decided to keep him around! As Stanley was fond of saying, the only place she would go with him was to church. He gave his life to Christ in what he said was the best decision of his life—followed closely by his marriage to Mercedes in 1969.
Stanley served his church as the adult Sunday school teacher, treasurer, board member, and a faithful intercessor. He was often at the church by 6:00 AM to spend an hour in prayer before going to work. His commitment to Jesus was evident by his sincere love for people, generosity with time and money, and joyful hope of Heaven.
During their last three years in New Town, Stanley became fascinated with computers. He purchased an early system, taught himself programming, and started a small business doing water billing for local communities.
In 1980, Stanley was offered a position as a computer programmer for Turtle Mountain Community School in Belcourt, ND. As Director of the Computer Center, he wrote software to do accounting, payroll, and student services. It’s doubtful anyone loved his job or co-workers more than Stanley. He was honored by the entire district at his retirement as “going above and beyond whatever was asked of him.”
Stanley and Mercedes made their home in Rolla, ND, where they raised their son and daughter. Stanley whole-heartedly supported and videotaped his children’s many activities. He passed on his love of technology to his son and his love of traveling to his daughter.
Stanley was always designing or working on a construction project. As a young man he helped renovate the family’s farmhouse and built a set of corrals. He completed many other projects in the homes he lived in and churches he attended.
In 2007, Stanley launched into his dream for retirement. He bought a motorhome and for the next seven years, he and Mercedes spent winters remodeling churches in Texas, Arizona, California, and Nevada through Assemblies of God MAPS. His retirement travels were the epilogue of a lifetime of exploring. Prior summers involved multi-week road trips packed with all the museums, national parks, and relatives time allowed. In total, Stan visited 46 states and nine countries. His children fondly remember hours in the van, mountains whipping past the windows, eating summer sausage sandwiches because Stanley’s packed itinerary didn’t include time to stop for meals.
Stanley’s kind smile and warm handshakes will be greatly missed. He truly “served the Lord’s purpose in his generation, and then was gathered to his fathers.”
Stanley is survived by his loving wife, Mercedes; son Blaine of Bismarck, ND; daughter Melanie of Bismarck; and siblings Mary Campbell of Waldport, OR and Richard (Vanda) Campbell of Minot, ND.
