Susan Wetzel Obituary

Susan (Susie) Marie Wetzel, 72, of Hazen, went to be with the Lord on January 31, 2022, with her family by her side. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST, Saturday, February 5, 2022, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Hazen with Fr. Bruce Krebs officiating. Visitation will be held an hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Susan was born on April 9, 1949 to Leonard and Emma (Strachen) Winnegge in Cando, ND. She was raised in Lakota, ND and this is where she met and married James (Jim) N. Wetzel on November 20, 1965. They lived in Minot, ND for a few years before making Hazen, ND their permanent home where they raised their three children.

Susie worked at Hiway Express for 40 years where she made many friends. She looked forward to visiting with her customers and friends every day, which made her decision to retire in 2020 a difficult one. At her time at Hiway Express, she became famous around town for her caramel rolls & over-sized muffins. Her customers would often say, “No one can make muffins the way Susie does”.

She enjoyed quilting and sewing and was often asked to make baby blankets for her grandchildren. She was known and praised for her talents for cooking and baking and her children always had their very own special requests whenever she came to visit. Time spent with family was often gathered around the table playing cards or marbles on homemade marble boards that Jim and Sue made so that the family could carry on the tradition that was passed down from her family. Susan and her husband Jim loved to go camping and fishing with family & friends. She looked forward to being with friends and playing Bingo on Friday nights.

Susie is survived by her son, James and Ericka Wetzel (Wahpeton), daughter Kim & Joe Oxner (Billings), and daughter Brenda & Brian Baer (Glendive), nine grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Betty Langton and Kathy Skalicky.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Wetzel Sr.; her father, Leonard Winnegge; mother, Emma Winnegge, and sister, Barb (Winnegge) Tufte.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sakakawea Hospice, 510 8th Ave. NE, Hazen, ND 58545.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
