Viola (Adolf) Schiermeister

Viola (Pfeifer) Schiermeister, age 92, died May 1, 2018, in Mesa, AZ.  Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, on June 16, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, ND, with Pastor Bill Wagner, officiating. 

Viola was born to Edward and Katherine (Reb) Adolf in June 1925 in Zap, ND.  She grew up and attended school in Zap.  Viola married George Pfeifer in 1943, and lived in Zap until moving to Bismarck, ND, in 1963.  In 1973, Viola married Albert Schiermeister.  Viola and Albert lived in Bismarck until moving back to Zap in 1977.

Viola worked in various positions over the years, including owning the telephone exchange in Zap with George until selling to West River Telephone in 1960.  After living on a small farm on the edge of Zap and then moving to Bismarck, Viola worked at J. C. Penney, Co. in Bismarck, until 1975.  Besides working as a clerk and sewing custom drapes at J. C. Penney, Co., while living in Zap, Viola was at various times a church organist, owned a small restaurant, and drove a school bus.  At one time, she was a night security guard at the Indian Head Mine, Zap.  For the last years living in Zap, Viola cooked and baked at the Country Kettle Restaurant in Beulah.  After suffering a stroke in 2011, Viola lived in Mesa, AZ, with her daughter, Rhonda Schmidt, and in then in an assisted living facility until her death.

Viola enjoyed sewing, quilting, needlework, playing cards and games, traveling, and visiting and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.

Viola is survived by her children:  Cynthia (Les) Bender, Blaine, MN; Patricia Perry, Mesa, AZ; Rhonda (Richard) Schmidt, Mesa, AZ; James Pfeifer, Irving, TX, Randall Pfeifer, Florence, AZ; and step-daughter, Arleen Topp (Richard), Carrington, ND.  She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and her sister, LaVerna Unruh, Beulah, ND.

Viola was proceeded in death by her husbands, George Pfeifer and Albert Schiermeister; her son, Clyde; brothers Robert and Oscar Adolf; and sister, Delma (Adolf) Hutchinson.
