Willard was enlisted with the National Guard and moved from Williston to Kansas when his unit was called up for active duty. The couple later moved to Surrey, ND and then moved on to Hazen, ND where they made their home for many years. Willard began working for ICI as a pipefitter and helped with construction of many of the area power plants. He worked for ICI for over 50 years.

Willard loved the outdoors. He enjoyed farming in his earlier years as well as fishing and hunting. He also liked to mow grass, raise rabbits and sold minnows for a time. Willard could often be found at area sporting events. One year, Willard was named Hazen’s Citizen of the Year.
