Willard A Borlaug

Willard A. Borlaug, 86, of Hazen, ND passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 2:00 PM CST on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Mark Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Hazen City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Willard was born on November 14, 1935 in Bonetrail, ND, the son of Iver and Selma (Fougner) Borlaug. Willard’s family moved to a farm at the Trenton Bottoms where they raised their family. He grew up here and attended country school until the eighth grade. He went on to help on the family farm for several years before moving to Williston where he worked construction. He married Janice Syverson at First Lutheran Church in Williston on June 12, 1958. The couple was blessed with six children. Willard was enlisted with the National Guard and moved from Williston to Kansas when his unit was called up for active duty. The couple later moved to Surrey, ND and then moved on to Hazen, ND where they made their home for many years. Willard began working for ICI as a pipefitter and helped with construction of many of the area power plants. He worked for ICI for over 50 years.

Willard loved the outdoors. He enjoyed farming in his earlier years as well as fishing and hunting. He also liked to mow grass, raise rabbits and sold minnows for a time. Willard could often be found at area sporting events. One year, Willard was named Hazen’s Citizen of the Year.

He is survived by his wife, Janice of Hazen; five sons, Byron (Pam), Kelly (Heather), Gary, Steve (Carla) and Keith (Tina), all of Hazen; one daughter, Donna (Max) Amsden of Hazen; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gloria (Marlo) Blomberg of Williston; one brother, Allen Borlaug of Minnesota; his dog, Domino; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Willard was preceded in death by his parents, Iver and Selma; one brother, Sylvan; seven sisters, Salina (Paul) Bruns, Lorraine (Robert) Olson, Olga Breeding, Irene Wilson, Syneva Sliper, Bertha Grimstvedt, and Iva Bauste; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Borlaug and Carol Borlaug.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Knife River Care Center and M & M Pet Rescue.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
