Winfred was born on January 3, 1943, the son of Jacob and Eva (Streifel) Duttenhefer. He attended farm school and then attended Dodge High School, graduating in 1961. Winfred married his high school sweetheart, Karen Keller, in 1963. He held various jobs until he went to work for North American Coal in September 1973 and retired from there in February 2007.

Winfred loved helping his brother and nephew on the farm whenever possible. There is the saying – you can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy. That was Winfred.

Winfred and Karen made their home in Dodge, where they raised their four daughters. Boy, was he outnumbered. He loved his family and the get-togethers they had for holidays, birthday parties, picnics and camping. Winfred especially liked the games they played where he made his own rules.

He loved snowmobiling, fishing, golfing, driving his Ranger side-by-side, playing softball, hunting and playing cards. Winfred enjoyed taking his ice house out for the deer hunters to warm up and eat, they called it the Sugar Shack.

Winfred is survived by his wife, Karen; three daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Dan Delger of Bismarck, Stephanie and Todd Bitterman of Hazen and Carmen and Rick Dschaak of Mandan; seven grandchildren, Alyssa (Tommy) Anderson of Bismarck, Logan Dschaak of Bismarck, Jacob (Kaitlin) Bitterman of Mandan, Nikole Bitterman of Bismarck, Josh Bitterman of Grand Forks, Hayle (Zach) Hauser of Bismarck and Erin (Mikey) Morris of Beulah; his great-grandchildren, Tavin, Kohven and Brexin, Vayda, Jace, Oaklyn, Haven, Reese, Briggs and one on the way; one brother, Tony (Marilyn) Duttenhefner; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Sarah  and Larry Frei,  Lemor and Vida Keller and Marva Keller; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle; his parents; his in-laws, Rufus and Lorraine; his brothers, Michael, Steve and Ralph (Rosemary); his sister, Janice (Wayne) Nodland; and his brother-in-law, Duane.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
