Calvin Mittelsteadt

February 16, 1932 ~ April 12, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Calvin Adam “Cal” Mittelsteadt, 85, of Hazen, ND went home to Heaven on April 12, 2017. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CDT on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at English Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Al Beyer officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, April 17 at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.

Cal was born by midwife to Ferdinand, Jr. and Lydia (Baisch) Mittelsteadt near Krem, ND. Cal was raised on his family homestead north of Hazen. He attended country school and graduated from Hazen High School in 1950. He then worked for the Army Corp. of Engineers on the Garrison Dam Project. Cal enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in October 1951 and served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. In 1953 he was stationed in Roswell, NM where he met his first wife and from this marriage had one daughter in 1956 named Laurie. The couple divorced in the late 1950s and Cal was transferred to Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, NH. There he met Gloria Rosario Garza in 1967 and the two were wed in 1968. Cal became a stepfather to Suzette Wall and the couple had two more children, Lydia and Calvin “Kelly”.  Cal retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1971 and became a heating/AC technician. After nearly 25 years in the heating/AC business, Cal retired.

Cal and Gloria moved back to Hazen in 1995 for the summers and permanently in the spring of 1997.

Cal is survived by his children, Laurie (Dave) Lopez of Lakewood, CO, Lydia (James) Mittelsteadt-Melton of Alvarado, TX, Calvin “Kelly” Mittelsteadt II of Hazen, ND, and Suzette Wall of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Justin Lopez and Josh, Jamie and Jarrett Melton; one great-grandchild, Carter Melton; one brother, Rodney Mittelsteadt of Grand Forks, ND; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arthur “Jackson” and Arnim; two sisters, Ida Schuh and Agnus Hildebrand; and his wife, Gloria who passed away on March 20, 2017.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
