August 29, 1946 ~ September 4, 2016 (age 70) 70 Years Old

JANET R. JOHNSON, 70, of Hazen, died Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Sanford Health, Bismarck.  Services will be held at 2:00 PM CDT, Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Bruce Grentz officiating.  Burial will follow at a later date at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Janet Rae Halstenson was born on August 29, 1946, to Hilman and Martha (Eckhardt) Halstenson in Wahpeton, ND.  She grew up on a farm near Mooreton, ND and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1964.  She was united in marriage to Sherman Johnson on July 24, 1971, in Wahpeton at Bethel Lutheran Church. To this union they were blessed with one daughter, Rachelle.

Jan was awarded a nursing scholarship at Wahpeton State College of Science where she received her LPN degree.  She worked as a victim witness advocate with the WARC for over 30 years.  In 1998, Jan received the “Outstanding” Victim Witness Advocate of North Dakota Award.

Jan enjoyed gardening, fishing, summers at Blanche Lake, watching the Minnesota Twins and most of all, spending time with her precious granddaughters, Afton and Tayah, who lovingly referred to her as “Nanny”.  She was able to fulfill her bucket list by sitting in the front row at her favorite country singer Alan Jackson’s concert.  Jan was compassionate, generous and loved her work.

She is survived by her husband, Sherman of Hazen; one daughter, Rachelle (Scot) Ross of Dickinson; granddaughters, Afton and Tayah; a special daughter, Annette and Dale Wolden of Hazen and their children, Matthew, Brady and Teah; three sisters, Muriel (Gordon) Johnson of West Fargo, Cheryl (John) Lee of Colfax, ND; Pam (Bill) Braun of Wahpeton; three sisters-in-law, Renee (Joe) Speidel of Wahpeton, Fran Huberty of Union, WA, Cheri Jessen of Mandan, ND; her mother-in-law, Jo Johnson; she was Nanny Jan to Mya, Jace, Jozie, and Eden Elkin of Dickinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Bev Wateland and Connie Weber; three brothers, Rodney Huberty, Gary and Jim Halstenson; one nephew, Bradley Halstenson; father-in-law, Smiley Johnson.
